Burberry have been notably successful in creating a unique luxury retail experience, so this move makes a lot of sense for Apple in my view. http://gigaom.com/2013/10/15/apple-poaches-burberry-ceo-ahrendts-to-be-its-new-retail-chief/ New business models Every self-respecting internet ad platform has the ability to self-serve, now FourSquare has one too. This might finally make the service useful outside of the USA. As an aside: although I rather like checking in, I don’...

What I've been reading this week

I’m of the belief that participants in the TMT industry need to read widely in order to understand the present and future dynamics of the market. To that end, this post is a collection of the articles that have caught my eye. This week:  robots, wearables, self-driving cars & some thoughts on decisions Media The BBC has suspended 3D programming indefinitely, citing limited audience appetite. 3D just hasn't worked out as the TV industry hoped, but these things happen. And 4K is nearly here. The audience will definitely like that. Oh yes!  http://www.upi.com/Science_News/Technology/2013/07/05/BBC-announces-decision-to-halt-3D-television-programming/UPI-41911373064121/ If you were somehow watching the Wimbledon tennis championships on 4K you could also enjoy adverts placed onto nails, water bottles etc... in real time. Fascinating. Pointless. It's tech!  http://metro.co.uk/2013/07/04/video-wimbledon-allows-adverts-on-nails-as-sony-showcases-4k-ultra-hd-386...

I’m of the belief that participants in the TMT industry need to read widely in order to understand the present and future dynamics of the market. This week: Apple and Amazon beat Microsoft on Black Friday, Volvo goes self-drive but Cambridge warns of robogeddon Digital media ITN launch a citizen journalism on Youtube. Perhaps one of the aforementioned citizens can post a story about why ITN would do that. http://www.journalism.co.uk/news/itn-production-s-citizen-journalism-youtube-channel-launches/s2/a551300/ Technology Jawbone were one of the first companies to launch a wristband activity monitoring product. I’m of the belief that participants in the TMT industry need to read widely in order to understand the present and future dynamics of the market. To that end, this post is a collection of the articles that have caught my eye. This week: $10 ereaders, AOL discovers social media, robots fly in formation, Vodafone eyes cheap SFR deal & Apple poaches Samsung’s chip guru Digital media CDNs account for 40% of the traffic flowing into ISP networks and I can only see their role getting more significant as the web gets richer in content terms and quality of service and latency become ever more vital in powering experiences like augmented reality. Doesn’t mean there’s much money in the industry, mind you. Moore’s Law makes the infrastructure side of the CDN business a Sisyphean task. http://blog.streamingmedia.com/the_business_of_online_vi/2012/10/cdns-account-for-40-of-the-overall-traffic-volume-flowing-into-isp-networks.html This FT article about the unexpected benefits of digital ...
